System notifications
The desktop app pops up a notification when a database needs you, even with its window closed. Choose what notifies, and how many a day.
Every alert lands in the Inbox. Eligible items can also send a Windows notification, macOS alert, or Linux desktop notification. Delivery follows your event switches, daily notification setting, and operating system permissions. Click a notification to open the item.
Notifications come from the desktop app, so they keep coming while its window is closed, as long as RDST is running in the tray.
What notifies
Open Inbox, then Notification settings. Under Notify me when, each event has its own switch:
| Event | Default |
|---|---|
| Database unreachable: RDST can't connect, so monitoring is paused | On |
| Monitoring resumed: RDST reached the database again | Off |
| Stuck query: a query has been running for over a minute | On |
| Query changes: a query that carries real load slows down or changes plan, or a new heavy query shows up | On |
| Database-wide changes: connections near the maximum, a rollback or deadlock spike, or a cache hit ratio drop | On |
| Monitoring needs you: sign-in expired, the database password is missing, or setup is incomplete | On |
An event that's off still files its Inbox item. It just doesn't pop up.
How many a day
Notifications a day controls pop-ups per database. Check or change its value in Notification settings. Past that setting, changes still land in the Inbox and in the nightly report.
A lost connection doesn't count toward the cap and is never held back by it.
Lost connection
When RDST can't reach a monitored database, it:
- raises Can't reach the database in Act now and requests a notification;
- shows the tray icon's problem state, with the database named in its tooltip;
- marks the gap on the chart as Monitoring paused: RDST couldn't reach the database.
A single blip doesn't count. RDST waits for 2 failed checks in a row, or 2 minutes since the first failure, before it raises the item. When the database is back, the item closes on its own and says how long the gap was.
Turn notifications on or off
Two switches control the same thing:
- Notifications in the tray menu.
- System notifications in Notification settings.
Send test notification in the tray menu shows a sample, so you can check your system lets them through.
Windows notification settings
Windows can block notifications without telling the app. RDST checks on launch and every few minutes, and if they're blocked, it says so in the window and in the tray menu (Notifications are blocked by Windows... Fix). To turn them on:
Open Settings, then System, then Notifications. The tray item opens this page for you.
Turn Notifications on.
Find RDST Desktop in the list of apps and turn it on.
Check Do not disturb is off, or that RDST is allowed through it.
On macOS, allow RDST in System Settings, Notifications. RDST uses alerts, which stay on screen until you dismiss them, so a lost database isn't missed.
In the browser version, rdst web, there's no tray. Browser notifications
in Notification settings pop up only while an RDST tab is open. Email and phone
alerts aren't available yet.
